Local Initiative Support Corporation (LISC) Financial Opportunity Centers

Financial Opportunity Centers (FOCs) are career and personal finance service centers that help low- to moderate-income people build smart money habits and focus on the financial bottom line. LISC has a network of nearly 80 FOCs across the country, embedded in local community organizations that are trusted, known for their history of providing quality services, and convenient to where people live and seek out services. The three videos below demonstrate FOCs in a variety of settings.

Jane Adams Research Corporation of Chicago

The video below highlights Tene Smith, a single mother of four, who sought help at the Jane Adams Research Corporation of Chicago, an FOC which specializes in training for manufacturing jobs but also in financial and employment help. Ms. Smith is now a successful welder.

EMERGE Financial Opportunity Center

EMERGE helps people facing obstacles redefine themselves. “The FOC isn’t actually a place, it’s more of a program model that ‘bundles’ three core activities in an integrated services delivery: financial coaching, employment coaching and income support access.”

CommonBond Communities Financial Opportunity Center

CommonBond Communities provides affordable rental apartments and townhomes throughout 50 cities in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. CommonBond’s Financial Opportunity Centers provide employment counseling, financial coaching and income support counseling within its multi-family housing complexes.

The Sparkpoint Center at Skyline College

Created by United Way Bay Area (California), SparkPoint Centers provide low-income residents with financial coaching, career counseling and more at 13 family-friendly locations. SparkPoint clients work one-on-one with a coach who supports them in identifying their goals, developing a step-by-step action plan and staying on track for success. Clients can also access professional development support, interview preparation, scholarship opportunities and much more. Services focus on bundling three key elements of financial success: managing credit, increasing income and building assets. This video highlights Sparkpoint Center at Skyline College.
